Enlightening : High Jump

Enlightening, It is the new section of the Para Athletics World Championships – PARIS’23 to teach you the different specialties of para athletics.

From July 8 to 17, 2023, 3 high jump competitions are held on the end of the lawn on the finish line, in the heart of the Charléty stadium. For these three high jump events, only men will compete. The number of women participants in the same disability category is insufficient to organize an event at the world championships.

In front of the classification number, you will find the letter T, which means Track for track events.

As for the categories of disability, we will have :

  • The T47 category, for athletes with amputated arms or limited movement.
  • The T63 category, intended for athletes whose leg is amputated above the knee or with limited movement.
  • The T64 category, intended for athletes whose leg is amputated below the knee or with limited movement.

For the conduct of a contest, it is the lead judge who determines the minimum height to start the contest and the number of centimeters to raise the bar (minimum 2cm). Athletes start the competition at the level they want. They have three attempts to get over the bar without dropping it. If the jump is successful, the height is increased but an athlete may decide to “skip” and try a higher bar. If the jump is successful, the height is increased but an athlete may decide to “skip” and try a higher bar.

To determine the ranking, the one who managed to jump the highest wins. In the event of a tie, those who have made fewer jumps on their last bar are considered better against their competitor with whom they are tied.

All these classes aim to make competitions fair. The idea is to avoid that the least handicapped always wins.
